TRS Racing Career Management Program: The Making of A Champion

The reason why society places so much distinction on champions is because they have surpassed the test of being human, they have sacrificed a big part of their lives for the 10 seconds or five minutes that will define them in History. Pacquiao, Schumacher, Woods, Hamilton, have devoted most of their lives into becoming who they are, through training, learning and pushing themselves into becoming the champions they are now. They had monumental support from people that have reared and pointed them to the gold trophy

The TRS Racing Career Management Program (TRS-RCM) is the Brain Child of JP Tuason. Over the years he has seen many young, up and coming drivers loose focus on their race careers and leave motorsports because of a lack of direction or funding. There were many potential talents, which instead of building up to successful career ended up in tears and expensive regret. TRS has always believed that motorsports can be a viable career for Filipinos, with natural talent in driving, the love for speed, physical built and height, Pinoys were born with the bucket (racing) seat in mind. Unfortunately, the opportunity to start in motorsports is not as available to potentials unlike basketball or soccer due to cost and training, but with the onset of TRS 11 years ago, the entry to motorsport has become more accessible, cost effective and hassle free. Potential champions have ready access to world class scientific training and equipment, which was drawn from TRS 22 years experience in training and competing around Asia, Europe and the US.

With the launch of the TRS RCM Program, TRS has created a customized curriculum that enables them to bring into training, younger individuals who aspire to have a viable and lucrative career in Motorsports. Formula 1 world champions Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and any other successful motorsports global player today, have all started their training in their formative years of 3-16 years old in karting, circuit cars & lower formulas. This has given them the edge to acquire the skill set and mindset of a Racing Champion.

The focus of this program is to take young drivers and mould them into the best drivers the Philippines has to offer. Looking at the end goal of getting a graduate to Professional International Motorsport. Several factors are covered by this program to make a young race driver a well rounded package. These factors include: Physical Training, Race Coaching, On Track Technical Expertise, Marketing & Public Relations, and Career Coaching.

Physical Training – Drivers are given a proper training routine supervised by a professional Trainer. Training takes the form of motor skills development, endurance training and cardio – vascular exercises. All training programs aimed at keeping the drivers in tip-top conditioning with race needs prioritized. Training is done twice a week at the drivers convenience with a mix of several different cross training sports (Frisbee, rock climbing, swimming and football) involved to keep things interesting for the drivers. Proper stretching before and after the exercises are also emphasized to keep the drivers away from injuries.

Race Coaching – Race experienced coaches take the drivers to the circuit for actual practice sessions on weekends in preparation for the races. Coaching in terms of racing lines, passing techniques, kart chassis set-up and race strategy is all discussed at length during practice sessions and on race weekends to give drivers the confidence to win! Coaching includes use of data loggers which are mounted on-board the karts to give drivers accurate feedback on mistakes made during sessions and give them the edge on the competition.

On Track Technical Expertise – During the practices and on race weekends TRS provides technical staff who are well versed in engine rebuilding and tuning. Engines are built and tuned specifically for each track to be raced on. Engines are rebuilt with out rushing to guaranteeing all clearances and tolerances are strictly met giving optimum performance. Trouble shooting on carburetor settings and cleaning can be done at the circuit to ensure the best performance always from the driver’s equipment.

Marketing & Public Relations – Drawing on TRS long running experience with running a professional race team, we teach the up and coming drivers how to find and work with long term sponsors and the media. A good driver must have the corporate backing to go all the way to the top and must learn to present themselves true to the values and vision of the team, their sponsors and the country.

Career Coaching - By providing different race and training opportunities all over the world, members of the RCM team have access to the latest technologies and competitive grid that will improve a potential drivers’ race experience and competition mentality. TRS RCM evaluates the strengths of each member and provides them the proper channels where they can excel in both in the Philippines or anywhere in the World.

TRS-RCM program Goals, is to give Filipino potentials a fighting chance to excel in the global arena. As former Malaysian Formula 1 Driver and Lotus young Drivers Training head Alex Yoong said, “F1 Champions are manufactured now.” JP Tuason is optimistic that the TRS RCM will eventually grow the participation of Filipinos in motorsport in the whole world and will one day catapult one deserving Filipino to F1, “With the right training, the right opportunities, and the right individuals, We believe we have the ability to make a Filipino global racing champion.”

KINGVIN JOSHUA TAN

Name: Kingvin Joshua Tan
Age: 5
Grade/Year: Prep School
School: St. Jude Catholic School
Hobbies: Playing with toy cars , watching TV
Sports: Karting

Background:

“Kingvin’s first word was car.” Quipped Edwin Tan, a entrepreneur that manufactures rubber products and Father of Kingvin Tan, a 5 year old race car driver in the making. When he was a toddler, driving around, was one of his favorites past times which later evolved into a game of identifying the vehicles. Like any other kid, Kingvin started his love affair with motorized vehicles by playing with small die cast Hotwheels. This will later on be replaced by Twist cars, but that was where he would differ from others. He would put himself on the highest point of his playground and glide down with speeds up to 15Kph without brakes, He was indeed a daredevil in the making.

He later moved into battery operated cars, which he maneuvered in his makeshift race track in one of his Dad’s warehouses. He would consume 2-3 battery packs and would not settle to just going around at a regular pace. At one point he made one turn too tight and he realized he need to drift the rear wheel tires, so made the necessary adjustments on the tire so it would drift, and he was able to complete the turn.

His Father realized it was time to move him to petroleum based cars since it would take 10 hours to charge one set of battery and he will discharge it in 5 minutes with his driving. They tried to figure our the best way to do this since they had no motorsports background whatsoever and they stumbled upon the Tuason Racing School (TRS) Website. He corresponded with JP Tuason, Founder of TRS through email. Kingvin’s Dad was aware of his young age so he sent JP a video of Kingvin drifting his toy car so that he would consider accepting Kingvin into the TRS Fold.

With the Tuason Racing School Program, the introduction to karting for this 5-year-old potential champion was smooth. Edwin had initial apprehensions in the beginning, thinking that it would be hard and expensive to set up. But with the help of TRS, Kingvin got exactly the right equipment He needed with no costly trials. “The training program is designed for Kingvin’s age and physical limitations. The results are so imminent. We could see a significant increase in maturity both physically and emotionally. I’ve never realized the degree of comprehension Kingvin can accommodate through the program, he understands stuff like centrifugal force. We believe that if racing is Kingvin’s calling we are on the right track with the TRS racing Career Management program.” Quipped Tan
